UNT has established a competitive $1,000 scholarship to be awarded each academic year
to eligible doctoral students who demonstrate academic excellence as determined by
a Toulouse Graduate School Scholarship Committee in accordance with established selection
criteria. Scholarship recipients will also be eligible to pay resident tuition for
the academic year in which the scholarship is awarded.
This scholarship may be automatically renewed for up to five years, pending semester
and annual review by TGS for compliance of Requirements for Scholarship Renewal.
Eligibility
All new, fully admitted doctoral students in the Toulouse Graduate School may apply
for the UNT Scholarship for Externally Funded Doctoral Students. To be eligible,
students must be able to provide evidence of.
- Guaranteed support in the academic year of application through a fellowship, stipend,
grant or other source in a total amount equal to or greater than $10,000 from one
or more organizations outside the University of North Texas System. Support will not
be considered if provided by loans, the student's immediate family, personal trusts,
or a grant or contract administered through the UNT Research Office or UNT Advancement.
The external source(s) of funding may include a:
- Corporation
- Government (domestic or international) incuding veteran's benefits
- Not-for-profit organization or other foundation not established exclusively for the
benefit of the student
- A 3.5 or higher overall GPA from the institution awarding the most graduate degree
and/or a 3.1 or higher overall GPA from the institution awarding the most recent undergraduate
degree.
- Admission to a UNT doctoral program without provisional requirements. In exceptional
cases, students only provisionally admitted may be considered and subsequent renewals
will require satisfaction of any provisional requirements.
*Students required to attend Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) upon arrival
will not be eligible to receive scholarship funds until they have completed the IELI
program and are only enrolled in graduate credit hours towards their doctoral degree.

Graduate students that meet the eligibility requirements will need to apply online
for consideration.
Selection Process
The selection committee will review each application to confirm a student's eligibility
for the scholarship, including a review of the fiscal viability of the external funding
source and to consider the following evidence of intellectual achievement:
- Standardized test scores including but not limited to:
- GRE verbal, quantitative, analytical writing scores;
- GMAT verbal, quantitative, analytical writing scores, and total GMAT score;
- GPA for total Undergraduate credit hours earned, GPA for last 60 hours Undergraduate
credit hours earned, and GPA for credit hours earned toward Masters
- Requirements of provisional admission. In exceptional cases, students only provisionally
admitted may be considered and subsequent renewals will require satisfaction of any
provisional requirements.
Selection committee member will independently review and rank each applicant. Final
awards will be determined by a vote of the selection committee.
Scholarship Requirements
- Students will enroll in and complete a minimum of 9 semester credit hours of 5000
or 6000 level courses (applicable to the degree program for which they were admitted
to the University of North Texas) during both the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters.
At least 18 graduate credit hours must be completed by the end of Spring 2016. Summer
enrollment does not count towards the 12 hour requirement.
- Students must maintain a minimum 3.25 grade point average (each semester, as well
as a cumulative 3.25) and maintain satisfactory progress in the degree program for
which they were admitted. These criteria apply for the entire academic period in which
the scholarship is awarded.
- This scholarship is contingent upon guaranteed support in each academic year through
a stipend, grant or other source in a total amount equal to or greater than $10,000
from one or more organizations outside the University of North Texas System.
- At the start of each semester, scholarship recipients will be required to attend a
professional development workshop on academic success, hosted by the Toulouse Graduate
School. Students who are unable to attend the workshop in person will be able to
view the program online.
