How to Write a DEI Statement: Part Two - Writing Workshop

The Toulouse Graduate School has partnered with UNT Diversity & Inclusion and the UNT Career Center to offer a two-part series designed to help graduate students craft a thoughtful and relevant diversity statement for their resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV). How to Write a DEI Statement is presented by Teresita Hurtado Ramos, LMSW, the Assistant Director of Diversity & Inclusion at UNT.

During the first segment, on July 14th, participants will attend the prerequisite course Cultural Humility 101 workshop that explores identities, self-reflection, and understandings of cultural humility and its importance in any field of study or future profession.  In this vital workshop, cohorts receive a foundational introduction to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) required to begin writing the DEI Statement.

The second segment is on July 16th. How to Write a DEI Statement is an interactive workshop that introduces writers to the purpose of a diversity statement focusing on stakeholders such as UNT, the corporation or program applying to, the communities connected at all levels, and the individual.  Elements of the statement are discussed, culminating in the learner writing their personal story connecting them to the Diversity and Inclusion work they have done and their intended contribution to future inclusive endeavors.

Objectives: By the end of this series, participants will be able to

  • Describe the Purpose of a Diversity Statement
  • Identify the Components of a Diversity Statement
  • Write a Diversity Statement focused on a personal story of connection
