Ready to start your application? This page will lead you through everything you need to know about applying as a graduate student to the University of North Texas.

Keep in mind that  program application deadlines vary.  

UNT reviews graduate program applications holistically. We consider all parts of the application and supporting documentation to determine admission. Contact your department directly for specific requirements as admission decisions are made at the program level.

Admission requirements

Applicants holding a bachelor’s degree with Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recognized accreditation, its equivalent credential from a foreign institution, or a three-year bachelor’s degree* that meets UNT’s established criteria, are eligible to apply for admission to UNT graduate study.

*Indian three-year degrees must be from an institute with an NAAC “A” rating at the time the student attended, and the student’s converted GPA must be 3.0 or above.

GPA requirement for UNT consideration

Graduate applicants to UNT are evaluated holistically, based on specific departmental and program requirements. In the past, successful candidates usually have met certain GPA minimum requirements:

  • 3.00 GPA in the undergraduate degree for admission to the master's program
  • 3.50 GPA in the undergraduate degree for direct admission to doctoral programs
  • 3.50 GPA in master’s-level studies for admission to doctoral programs

How to apply

Select the term you intend to start classes:

Spring 2025

1. Complete your Application

Apply through ApplyTexas and submit the application selecting the University of North Texas.

Within 2-3 days, you will receive log in credentials to set up your MyUNT portal.

2. Pay Application Fee

Submit the $75 non-refundable payment* for the application which will prompt our office to begin the evaluation process.

You may pay the application fee by credit card, money order or check. A payment checklist item will be added to your MyUNT student portal 3-5 days after submitting your application. 

*McNair Scholars: The admission Application Fee Waiver can be satisfied through uploading a letter from your McNair director in the portal. You can also email the documentation verifying your McNair Scholar status to gradadmission@unt.edu.

3. Track To-Do List

Track various items on your To Do list, including status of transcripts or test results received as well as upload feature for some programs of supporting application materials (ex. Resume, statement of purpose, etc.)*

*Some programs do not allow for this feature so be sure to check their website for details on how to supply those items if not found available in your portal.

4. Submit Official Transcripts

Official transcripts are required from every college or university you have attended and must arrive by the application deadline. The transcripts must show you have earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution (or equivalent).

International applicants should review information about submitting academic documents.

If you are applying prior to graduating with your bachelor’s, submit your current transcript to allow for admission consideration. If admitted, you’ll be required to submit a final transcript with your degree posted.

5. Submit Program-Specific Application

Submit program-specific application and documentation by the department deadline. Some programs have earlier deadlines which require all documents submitted to be considered for admission. This may include items such as letters of recommendation, resume, etc.

Check the program website for details on specific admission requirements and application details. Keep in mind that any program deadline supersedes any other deadline.

1. Start Your Application

Apply with the UNT GradCAS (Centralized Application System).

2. Submit Application Materials

Inside the application portal you are able to:

  • Request transcripts from institutions that will be tied directly to your application
  • Upload documents like resume, statement of purpose, writing samples, etc.
  • Provide contact information for your recommenders to submit letters of recommendation via our system

3. Submit Test Scores

Complete the program-specific required entrance exams and submit your scores to UNT's Office of Admissions through the testing agency.

Transcripts and other academic documents

Official transcripts are required from every college or university you have attended and must arrive by the application deadline. The transcripts must show you have earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution (or equivalent). If you are applying prior to graduating with your bachelor’s, submit your current transcript to allow for admission consideration. If admitted, you’ll be required to submit a final transcript with your degree posted.

Contact the colleges and universities you have attended about their processes for providing official transcripts. Most institutions provide transcripts electronically directly to us, all you have to do is request it.

If you previously attended the University of North Texas, you are not required to provide your UNT transcript to the UNT Office of Admissions. We will be able to obtain this from the registrar's office for you.
