UNT has established a competitive, $1,000 scholarship per academic year– $500 in the Fall and $500 in the Spring– to be awarded to eligible doctoral and master's students who demonstrate academic excellence, as determined by a Toulouse Graduate School Scholarship Committee in accordance with established selection criteria. Scholarship recipients may be eligible to pay resident tuition for the academic year in which the scholarship is awarded, regardless of the length of time they have been a Texas resident.
This scholarship may be automatically renewed for up to five years, pending semester and annual review by TGS for compliance of Requirements for Scholarship Renewal.
All new, fully admitted doctoral and master's students in the Toulouse Graduate School may apply for the UNT Scholarship for Externally Funded Students Scholarship. To be eligible, graduate students must be able to provide evidence of:
Guaranteed support in the academic year of application through a stipend, grant or other sources in a total amount equal to or greater than $5,000 from one or more organizations outside the University of North Texas System. The external source(s) of funding may include a corporation, government (domestic or international), not-for-profit organization or other foundation not established exclusively for the benefit of the student. Support will not be considered if provided by the student’s immediate family, a personal trust or a grant or contract administered through the UNT Research Office or UNT Advancement.
*Students required to attend Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) upon arrival will not be eligible to receive scholarship funds until they have completed the IELI program and are only enrolled in graduate credit hours towards their degree.
Scholarship term for Fall 2025 - Spring 2026 semesters.
May 1, 2025 at 11:59 P.M. Central Daylight Time (CDT).
Continuing and fully admitted graduate students that meet the eligibility requirements will need to submit UNT’s Eagle Scholarship Portal in order to be considered for this scholarship opportunity. In addition, applicants need to choose and submit required documents outlined for the Externally Funded Students Scholarship opportunity.
Completed applications will be reviewed holistically and ranked by 3 senior staff members of The Toulouse Graduate School. Recipient selection is based on applications, admissions data, fiscal viability of the external funding source, and evidence of superior intellectual achievement, including:
Students must enroll in and complete a minimum of 9 semester credit hours of 5000 or 6000 level courses (applicable to the degree program for which they were admitted to the University of North Texas) during both the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters. At least 18 graduate credit hours must be completed by the end of Spring 2026. Summer enrollment does not count towards the 18 hour requirement.
Students must maintain a minimum 3.25 grade point average and maintain satisfactory progress in the degree program for which they were admitted. These criteria apply for the entire academic period in which the scholarship is awarded.
For scholarship renewal, students must maintain sponsorship funding equivalent to or greater than UNT’s funding support. During the annual renewal process, students may be required to provide documentation of continued sponsorship funding for the following academic year.
At the start of each semester, students will be required to attend a professional development workshop on academic success, hosted by the Toulouse Graduate School. Students who are unable to attend the workshop in person will be able to view the program online.
If a student does not meet scholarship renewal requirements, any unused scholarship funds and associated tuition waivers will be discontinued.
Requirements for continued funding of individual scholarships are outlined in the scholarship offer letters.
Annual scholarship offers are extended based on funds available, and the submission of a scholarship application does not guarantee a scholarship offer will be extended. TGS encourages all students to compete for available funding by applying for scholarship opportunities.
